중약명선학초(仙鶴草) - 짚신나물(龍芽草, Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb.)의 지상부를 건조한 것

학   명 Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb.

용아초는 장미과 속의 다년생 식물로 학명은 Agrimoia이며, 순수 우리말은 짚신나물이다.
아명은 선학초, 지선초, 활화초, 낭아초라 한다.
용아초라는 이름은 이른 봄철에 돋아나는 새싹 또는 열매의 날카로운 털이 안쪽으로
구부러진 모습이 용의 어금니를 닮았다고 해서 생긴 것입니다.
‘Agrimony’는 8월 21일의 탄생화로 꽃말은 아시아에서는 ‘감사’의 뜻이며 그리스어로 가시가
많은 식물을 뜻합니다. 가을바람이 불어 올 즈음에 풀밭을 걸으면 허리깨에 꽃받침이 달라 붙습니다.
그것이 바로 용아초(짚신나물) 식물입니다.

파르나소스산에서는 ‘마법의 풀’이라고 합니다. 신하에게 독살될 뻔 한 미트라다테스왕은 이 풀을
해독제로 먹고서 목숨을 구했다고 합니다.약으로서는 만능, 용아초라고 일컬어지기도 하며,
중국에서는 설사나 피가 섞여 나오는 변에 특효약으로 중시되었다고 합니다. 뿌리는 삶아서
피부염에 쓴다고 합니다.
그리스인들과 로마인들은 약효가 뛰어난 Agrimony를 매우 귀하여 여겼습니다. 라틴어 학명인
Agromony는 ‘각막의 하얀 점＇을 의미하는 그리스어 Agremon에서 유래하는데, 이는 Agrimony가
눈의 질환을 치유할 수 있기 때문이라고 합니다.

‘아그리모니’는 폰투스(Pontus)국의 왕이자 뛰어난 허브치료사였던 Eupato에서 유래하는데,
그가 최초로 간질환 치료와 해독에 Agrimony를 심어서 소화가 안되고 배가 불편할 때, 그리고 상처를 치료할 때 이용하였습니다.
쿨페퍼는 아그리모니를 통풍이나 타박상 또는 삐거나 상처난 곳, 그리고 뱀에 물린 곳에 사용하도록 권하였습니다.
북미에서는 인디안들과 캐나다인들이 열을 내리는데 Agrimony를 이용하였고, 프랑스인들은 허브차로 마시기도 하였고,
삐고 멍든 데에 치료제로 사용하기도 하였습니다.

본초강목 – 선학초

선학초(仙鶴草)는 산과 들에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 다년생 식물이다.
일명 용아초(龍芽草), 석타천(石打穿)이라고도 불리는 선학초는 장미과에 속한 짚신나물의 전초를
건조하여 약으로 사용한다. 약물의 효능에 대하여 집대성한 [본초강목]에 보면 선학초는 맛이 쓰고 매우며
독성이 없는 약이다. 그 효능은 ＂위와 장을 개통하고 굳게 뭉친 덩어리를 풀어 준다.＂라고 했다.

중약대사전 – 장의

중국에서 발간된 [중약대사전(中藥大辭典)]에서 선학초면을 보면 아주 흥미로운 대목이 있다.
옛날 장의라는 의사가 반위를 다스림에 있어 선학초가 있었음을 그 누가 알았겠는가?
반위는 불치의 병이라 하여 대부분의 의사들이 속수무책인데 나는 선학초로 열에 아홉은
효험을 보았으니 실로 엄동설한에 털옷을 만난 격이라고 극찬한 대목이 있다. 왜 이대목이
흥미로운가 하면 반위가 현대적인 병명으로는 위암, 식도암에 해당하는 병이기 때문이다.
예로부터 선학초는 다른 지혈제와는 달리 보익성이 있는 지혈제로 폐출혈, 위출혈, 장출혈,
붕루(기능성자궁출혈), 혈료등의 치료에 널리 사용하였다. 최근에 선학초의 항암효과가
밝혀지면서 위암, 간암, 폐암, 자궁암 등으로 인한 암성 출혈증상의 치료에 탁월한 효능을 보이고 있다.
